5 Ardmore, Merion, Wynnewood Priests On 'Credibly Accused' List

ProPublica has released the most comprehensive list yet on 'credibly accused' clergy. Here are those with Ardmore, Merion, & Wynnewood ties.

ARDMORE-MERION-WYNNEWOOD, PA — Several priests with connections to Ardmore, Merion and, Wynnewood are part of a comprehensive list of Catholic clergy who have been "credibly accused" of sexual abuse.

The searchable database — which includes hundreds of priests accused from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, as well as dioceses in Scranton, Allentown, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, and more — comes on the heels of a grand jury report that revealed hundreds of "predator" priests across the state.

The list, put together by Patch partner ProPublica, includes dozens of other priests who served in neighboring municipalities.

Here's the list of clergy who have worked in Ardmore, Merion, and Wynnewood and have been credibly accused of sexually abusing minors. Most have either passed away or been defrocked.

John D. Reardon

He served as the assistant pastor at St. Colman in Ardmore from June 1987 to June 1988.

Reardon was living at Presentation Blessed Virgin Mary in Wynnewood from December 1993 to March 1994.

He also lived at Seven Dolors in Wynnewood from March 1994 to June 2000.

He was ordained in 1973.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia is working to determine his future.

Richard J. McLoughlin

McLoughlin lived at Presentation Blessed Virgin Mary in Wynnewood from April 1994 to May 1994.

He was ordained in 1969.

While not laicized (defrocked), he is serving a "life of prayer and penance."

H. Cornell Bradley

Ordained in 1969, Bradley was in the Jesuit Community at St. Joseph's University in Merion Station from 1996 to 2006.

He was removed form ministry in 2006 and left the Jesuits in 2007.

James J. Gormley

Gormley was at Waldron Academy in Merion Station from 1983 to 1985.

He was ordained in 1954.

Gormley died in 2005.

Stephen M. Garrity

Garrity was ordained in 1970.

He lived in the Jesuit Community at St. Joseph's University Merion Station during the mid 1970s to early 1980s.

From 1980 to 1982, Garrity was part of the Jesuit Community at St. Joe's.

He was removed from ministry in 2007 and died in 2014.

The Pennsylvania grand jury investigation, which prompted ProPublica's project, was described by the Associated Press as the "biggest and most exhaustive ever" into priest sex abuse by an individual state. The investigation revealed many priests admitted to their actions and were allowed to continue in the ministry for years despite having confessed to molesting children.

In one case, after a priest confessed to anal and oral rape of at least 15 boys, a bishop who later met with him commended him as "a person of candor and sincerity."

Another priest who was "grooming his middle school students for oral sex," was accused by several victims before he was removed 15 years later, the grand jury found.

The Pennsylvania grand jury report was pivotal in spurring dioceses around the country to release lists of abusers associated with their churches, ProPublica said.
