Newtown Library Hosts Melmark Artists During July

NEWTOWN SQUARE–The is honored to host Melmark Artists during the month of July.

The Newtown Library’s July Art Exhibit by Melmark students is a platform to raise awareness for these exceptional artists, and the organization which serves children, adults and families affected by a broad range of developmental disabilities. All are diagnosed with autism, and while many are non-verbal, they do communicate their feelings through paint and canvas.

Joanne Gillis-Donovan, Ph.D., Melmark’s President and CEO explains: “All too often, people focus on the disabilities of children with special needs, but Melmark’s mission is to focus on their abilities.  Our students are very talented, and The Melmark Traveling Art Show allows us to share their talents with the public.  We are thrilled to have the support of community organizations like The Newtown Square Public Library.”

Currently, each of the 87 students at Melmark attends an art class taught by Ms. Rebecca Ryder.  Art provides the students an alternative mode of communication and helps them develop their fine motor skills.  The students are either offered private lessons, or enjoy classes with up to 5 students.  They utilize a variety of media – including specially adapted rollers, brushes, and even bubble wrap to apply the paints!

Melmark, based in Berwyn, and with a location in Andover, MA, provides residential, educational, vocational and therapeutic services for children and adults with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities, acquired brain injuries and other neurological and genetic disorders.  Melmark’s programs and services are offered in an environment of warmth, care and respect.   A selection of Melmark’s students’ artwork is on display at Newtown Public Library July 1 through 31, 2012. Further information on Melmark can be found at www.melmark.org .
