Delaware County Symphony Features Flutist Kimberly Reighley

Present your Delaware County or Montgomery County Library card and receive two tickets for the price of one the day of the concert.

The Delaware County Symphony (DCS) under the direction of Music Director Joseph Caminiti will present the second full symphonic concert of the 2016-2017 season on Sunday December 4, 2016 at 3:00 pm in the Meagher Theatre of the Thomas A. Bruder, Jr. Life Center at Neumann University, One Neumann Drive, Aston, PA ( ¼ mile west of Concord Rd. and Rt. 452).

The concert opens with Overture to the Magic Flute by Wolfgang Mozart. It is without doubt one of the greatest and enjoyable overtures by Mozart offering us a merry fugue, sparkling melodies and the ceaseless optimism that was so characteristic of Mozart.

The concert continues with guest soloist Kimberly Reighley, flute, performing Concerto for Flute and Orchestra by Lowell Liebermann. This dramatic and Romantic flute concerto is one of the most important twentieth-century additions to the repertory of the instrument. In 1994 the National Flute Society of the United States named it as the best new work for the instrument. The concerto is in three movements and begins with a devoted light and lyrical theme. The middle movement, Adagio, creates a hypnotic effect with a pulsing off-beat accompaniment that continues throughout offering up a mood that is Romantic and tender. The finale is fast paced and demands from the artist virtuosity, technical brilliance and endurance.

Ms. Reighley, Professor of Flute at West Chester University, is the Principal Flutist with the Delaware Symphony, Opera Delaware and the Bay-Atlantic Symphony, and Piccoloist with the Reading Symphony. In addition, she is the Co-Artistic director of the chamber ensemble, Mélomanie, an ensemble that pairs early and contemporary works performed on both period and modern instruments. Kim is also a member of the Quintsylvania Winds, an ensemble that has performed most notably at Weil Recital Hall and Steinway Hall in New York. She has appeared as a soloist on baroque flute, modern flute, piccolo and alto flute at the Carmel Bach Festival, the National Flute Association Convention, and with the Delaware Symphony and Reading Symphony. In 2015, Kim was awarded the Masters Fellowship in Solo Recital, the Delaware Division of the Arts highest honor. Reviews of her solo performances include: “Flutist Kimberly Reighley…playing a Baroque wooden flute produced a sound almost unearthly in its purity and transparency….There was such a lovely effortless quality about Reighley’s music making that I never wanted this performance to end…” and Reighley’s technique was dazzling, her playing sheer joy.

The concert concludes with Ancient Aires & Dances, Suite No. 1 by Ottorino Respighi and Symphony No. 2 in B Minor by Alexander Borodin.
