Gas Tanker Crashes In Marple Over Weekend

A truck carrying gasoline crashed Saturday morning at Interstate 476 and West Chester Pike in Marple Township.

MARPLE, PA — A tanker truck hauling gasoline crashed over the weekend in Marple Township, according to local and county authorities.

The Broomall Fire Company was called to Interstate 476 south at West Chester Pike at about 6 a.m. Saturday for a report of a truck crash.

Firefighters found an overturned tanker truck on the ramp going from West Chester Pike to southbound I-476.

Responders noticed the truck was leaking gasoline from various damaged areas of the tanker and began damming and diverting the gas from the storm drains.

Hazardous material crews came to the scene to control and stop the leak, as well.

The fire company said specialty environmental services conducted air monitoring and worked to remove product from storm basins near the interchange.

According to Delaware County Emergency Services, 5,000 gallons of fuel were off-loaded to a support tanker and 3,000 gallons needed be transferred and/or recovered.

The fire company said the truck driver was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the crash.

The cause of the accident is under investigation by the PA State Police and the single occupant of the truck was taken by EMS to an area trauma center with non-life threatening injuries.

Additional clean-up and monitoring will take place in the coming days/weeks.

During the clean-up effort, all southbound traffic was diverted off of the ramp at the Radnor interchange.

Marple Police said the truck removed from the crash scene by about 5 p.m. Saturday.
