Heritage Commission selects Gen Butler Detachment for Award

The Americanism Team of the General Smedley D. Butler Detachment of the Marine Corps League, Newtown Square, regularly makes Americanism and Flag History presentations in local elementary schools, YMCAs, and Senior Centers.

A. Richard Paul, Chairman of the Heritage Commission of Delaware County, informed the Butler Detachment that because of its Americanism Flag History Program it has been selected to receive the Preservation Award for Special Programs. The Heritage Commission is a volunteer body appointed by the County Council with a mission to encourage historical and cultural awareness and preservation within the county. The Commission has been recognizing deserving programs and individuals for the past thirty years. The award will be presented to the Detachment at the County Council’s regular meeting on May 7 in the Delaware County Council main meeting room on the 2nd floor of the Government Center Building. A reception and luncheon will be held for awardees, members of the County Council, and members of the Heritage Commission in the Francis J. Catania Law Library on the top floor of the courthouse following the presentation. Paul Ferguson, Commandant of the General Smedley D. Butler Detachment, expressed gratitude for the Commission’s recognition of the Americanism Team’s effort to preserve the history of the American flag and to teach its significance.
