Mickey Vernon Sports Museum

Recently, over seventy years of legendary Delaware County women athletes were in attendance at the Grand opening of the Mickey Vernon Museum's Wide World of WomenSports Exhibit.  Those present erupted in applause as Putty Willetts, Swarthmore High School class of 1943, took her place among the star-studded cast of amateur and professional athletes.

Putty, the only living member of both the National U.S. Field Hockey and National U.S. Lacrosse Halls of Fame is in the center,  joined by, seen from left to right in the photo:

  • Strath Haven's Megan Smith Fizzano--Lacrosse
  • Sun Valley's Kim McKee--Rodeo
  • Drexel Hill's Shelbey Manthorpe--Volleyball
  • Upper Darby's Tiz Griffith--Field Hockey
  • Marple Newtown's Sarah, Courtney and Taylor Anderson--Curling
  • Museum curator Jim Vankoski
  • Springfield's Mares Stellfox--Auto Racing
  • Haverford's Renee Hykel Cuddy--Olympic Rowing
  • Lansdowne's Patricia Mescanti--Bowling
  • Archbishop Prendergast's Theresa Dunbar--Softball

Jim Vankoski believes this to be the most talented assemblage of local women athletes together at one time representing such a extensive period and so many different games.  The women brought with them  personal memorabilia to be placed on display at the museum--artifacts representing seventy-five years of Delaware County sports history.
