Coast Guard Reservist Raises U.S. Coast Guard Flag

Maritime Enforcement Officer Joe Curley, of Newtown Square, a U. S. Coast Guard reservist who is assigned to Sector Delaware Bay under command of the Coast Guard Station in Philadelphia, joined County Council Vice Chairman Mario J. Civera Jr. (left), and (from right) Councilman John P. McBlain, Council Chairman Thomas J. McGarrigle, Councilwoman Colleen P. Morrone and Councilman David J. White before the County Council meeting on July 31 in raising the U. S. Coast Guard Flag in the courtyard of the Delaware County Government Center and Courthouse complex to commemorate the anniversary of the Coast Guard, which was established on Aug. 4, 1790.

County Council authorized the flying of the flags of the five military branches for one week in connection with their birth dates on flagpoles in front of the Courthouse, Media, and in the courtyard.  The U.S. Army Flag was raised in connection with the anniversary of its founding on June 14, 1775.  Similar flags will be raised at appropriate times later this year in observance of the Air Force, established on Sep. 18, 1947; the Navy, on Oct. 13, 1775; and the Marine Corps, on Nov. 10, 1775.
