Convicted Felon Hired As Delaware County School Vice Principal

The district said a background check showed no "misconduct related to sexual assault," but records show that is not necessarily the case.

A convicted felon was hired to serve as a Delaware County school vice principal, according to media reports. Freddie Dean Smith was hired at Chester High School and has a criminal background that includes eluding police and exposing himself to women.

6ABC reports Smith was hired after the school's principal left and the vice principal advanced to the principal's role.

Smith was found guilty of felony charges of eluding police in 2003, and also was charged with sex crimes after allegedly approaching women and then exposing and touching himself in 2001 and 2002, according to the outlet.

"He is no longer with the district, the district's statement said. "As always, the safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority."

The school's statement on the hiring says Smith was only at the school for one day as a per diem vice principal and had no unsupervised contact with kids in the district.

"It is our standard procedure to conduct criminal background checks on all new hires before they begin employment with the school district,"the statement said. "The check performed on Freddie Dean Smith did not reveal any misconduct related to sexual assault."

He was apparently hired for the last six weeks of school through an emergency certification, the outlet reports.
