Delaware County Police Targeting Aggressive Drivers In Crackdown

Nine Delaware County police departments are joining 53 other departments across southeast Pennsylvania that will step up aggressive-driving enforcement as part of a statewide crackdown that runs from now through April 29.

Municipal police departments from Delaware, Chester, Montgomery, and Bucks counties will target motorists exhibiting aggressive-driving behaviors such as running red lights, speeding and tailgating.

Below are the participating Delaware County police departments:

• Aston Township
• Haverford Township
• Marple Township
• Newtown Township
• Radnor Township
• Ridley Township
• Springfield Township
• Upper Darby Township
• Yeadon Borough

"Our number one goal is to keep our roads safe," PennDOT District 6 Executive Kenneth M. McClain said in a statement. "This type of aggressive driving enforcement coupled with community outreach and education will reduce dangerous driving behaviors that put motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians at risk."

The enforcement is part of the Pennsylvania Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project and is funded by part of PennDOT's investment of federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The project, which launched in 2006, has covered nearly 600 roadways with additional enforcement and education.

Aggressive behaviors including speeding, running red lights, and tailgating will be monitored.

If you encounter an aggressive driver, PennDOT offers these tips:

• Get out of their way and don't challenge them
  
• Stay relaxed, avoid eye contact and ignore rude gesture
  
• Don't block the passing lane if you are driving slower than most of the traffic.
