Delco Man Fatally Struck On Highway After His Vehicle Got Rear-Ended: Police

One of the drivers fled the scene of the crash in Delaware, authorities said.

WILMINGTON, DE — A Delaware County man was fatally struck on a highway after getting into a crash and exiting his vehicle Saturday in Delaware, authorities said.

A Kia Optima rear-ended a Ford Windstar around 11:30 p.m. in the right northbound lane on Interstate 495 in Wilmington, near 12th Street, according to Delaware State Police. The crash pushed the Ford into a guardrail.

The Ford driver — Mark Barnett Sr., 45, of Upper Darby — exited his vehicle. As he walked on I-495, a Ram 1500 pickup truck struck him, police said.

Police didn't say whether Barnett was struck on the shoulder or in a lane of travel.

Barnett died at a local hospital.

The Kia driver left the scene as troopers arrived, according to State Police.

The Ram driver was unhurt.

I-495 northbound was closed for about five hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
