Dr. David J. Hufford, Spiritual Experiences of Combat Veterans

Dr. David J. Hufford, Pennsylvania Institute of Technology Adjunct Professor's Study of Spiritual Experiences of Combat Veterans

Dr. David J. Hufford, Adjunct Professor at P.I.T. College and Professor Emeritus at the Penn State College of Medicine, is the author of “Life after Military Combat: Finding a Place of Peace,” which is centered on his recently completed study of the near-death and other spiritual experiences of combat veterans, funded by the Department of Defense.

Dr. Hufford’s 33-year career at the College of Medicine at Penn State was centered on spiritual experiences and their relation to health and health care. David Hufford continues to pursue research on the “Old Hag” sleep paralysis phenomenon. His best-known work on this is “The Terror That Comes in the Night: An Experience-Centered Study of Supernatural Assault Traditions.” His primary research interests, which incorporate perspectives on applied folklore and theory, are in the areas of alternative health systems and folk belief and practice.

“There is so much more to learn about life and living,” says the College’s Founder, Professional Engineer Walter R. Garrison. “Our College must present comprehensive programs to questioning minds that inspire independent thought and opportunities to research to open new but valid pathways to healing health sciences.”

Dr. Hufford was honored to present the Veterans Day keynote address celebrating the service of William Brown, M.D. (1748-1792), the Physician General of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. General Brown, who served under General Washington, was in charge of hospitals between the Hudson and Potomac Rivers. He, too, was a visionary in terms of providing standardized and innovative care for the troops.
