CASTING & AUDITIONS
The Media Theatre will hold auditions for the region’s professional premiere of the Tony winning musical “Spring Awakening” on Monday, Jan. 9 from noon-6 p.m. at 104 E. State St.
“Spring Awakening” is a rock musical celebrating the unforgettable journey from youth to adulthood with music by Duncan Sheik and lyrics by Steven Sater. Set in the late 19th century in Germany, it focuses on teenagers who are in the midst of discovering the inner and outer tumult of passion. It is based on Frank Wedekind’s 1891 expressionist play.
The “Spring Awakening” audition on Jan. 9 is the Philadelphia region’s AEA (Actors Equity Association) Performer’s Call for the show. Non-union performers will be seen as time permits.
Those present at the call will be The Media Theatre’s Artistic Director Jesse Cline, who is directing the musical, and Resident Music Director Tom Fosnocht. Anyone auditioning must prepare 16 to 32 bars of music in the style of the show.
All roles are open. All actors portraying the students must appear to be high school age including: Melchior, who is headstrong, handsome, and charismatic; Moritz, his intense and nervous best friend. Also seeking Wendla, who is a childhood friend of the boys and falls in love with Melchior.
Other roles include Ilse, another childhood friend who runs away from an abusive home to become a Bohemian, and Hanshen, the humorous arrogant classmate of the boys. Georg is another classmate who lusts after his older piano teacher. Martha is one of the group who has controversial issues, and Ernst is a naive classmate.
Cline is also searching for Thea, who tries to brush her feelings of desire away to please adults, Otto who has odd dreams, and Anna who believes the youth should all be free. (As per the adult roles, there will be two non-singing adult “cameo” performers in the musical who will portray parents and school teachers).
“Spring Awakening” will run April 18 through May 20. For tickets, visit mediatheatre.org.
The Media Theatre casts on a per show basis. Auditions are held in locally and in New York. Audition notices are posted on this website(please check back later as we will post the dates for the season soon), on the Theatre Alliance website, Backstage, and elsewhere.
