How to Craft a Story: The Fundamentals of Screenplay Writing
Workshop 12:30pm – 2:30pm
It's easy to feel intimidated by the thought of writing your first screenplay. Don't let the seemingly endless parade of screenwriting elements scare you away from writing your first script. In this workshop you will learn the basics of the craft. Film is a visual medium. You will learn how to tell a story visually with a focus on what the audience sees and hears, as well as plot structure, setting the scene, character development, and writing effective dialogue.
Workshop Leader Hezekiah Lewis is a producer, director, screenwriter, actor and teacher. He is a graduate of UCLA’s prestigious film school with an MFA in Directing. While attending UCLA, Lewis won the Abraham Polonski Award for Excellence in Screenwriting, the Four Sisters Award and the James Bridges Award for Excellence in Directing. His film The Warrior Queen won the "Best of Show" at the 2010 Media Film Festival. Hezekiah Lewis is currently an Assistant Professor of Communication at Villanova University.
A Short, Yet Funny, History of the Movies
Workshop 2:30pm – 4:30pm
This workshop will show a range of exciting clips from classic films in an attempt to give film lovers a greater appreciation for the diverse, multi-faceted medium that dominates our thirst for mass entertainment. Film, over these past 100 years, has certainly come a long way from its humble, silent beginnings. At its best, it rivals great art and literature.
Workshop Leader Marc Lapadula is a full-time lecturer at Yale University, where he runs the screenwriting curriculum. Marc has also lectured extensively on film at Johns Hopkins University, Columbia Graduate Film School, the University of Pennsylvania, as well as the Smithsonian Institution. Lapadula has produced a number of feature films and has worked as a consultant and expert analyst for New Line and Paramount film studios. His former students have gone on to write hit movies including The Hangover and The Break Up.
