First VOCALIST rehearsal at Media Theatre Proves Talent is Strong

You want to get goosebumps this summer? See "The Vocalist".

Having just sat through the first of the "Vocalist" rehearsals for 2013 I can say with total confidence that audiences on Wednesday nights July 10-August 7 will not be disappointed!

The contestants as a whole satisfy this statement: The talent level in "The Vocalist" summer competition at The Media Theatre is the strongest showing of vocal ability on Delaware County's professional music theatre stage-- in an amateur showcase--in years. This does not mean that certain contestants in the past did not stand out--They most assuredly did. However, the 2013 contest (now branded "The Vocalist") lifts the entire showcase into the stratosphere.

As the rehearsal took place I, a very jaded listener and viewer, had Goosebump Fever several times. While I will not, at this time, name the contestants who brought me to that singular high I can tell you that if you do not purchase a ticket to watch this talent showcase on Wednesday nights during which ages 14-24 sing their hearts out you will be missing the highlight of the summer in the Delaware Valley.

Goosebumps went up and down my arms and several times I almost leapt out of my rehearsal supervisory seat to applaud--but stopped myself short because favoritism is not the name of the game. Several performers took me to new heights with renditions of songs like "I (Who Have Nothing)" and "Love Me Love Me Not".

Beautiful renditions of iconic tunes such as "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" were heard, as well as a few more contemporary songs that are radio and I-Tune mainstays.

Performers from The University of the Arts will bring the house down on Wednesday night, no doubt, as will vocalists from Delaware, Media, Sharon Hill, Wayne, and the surrounding region.

A high school student, age 16, caused me to sit up and pay attention with his superb interpretation of "Anthem" from the musical Chess. I could not help myself and stated, quite honestly, "You have a wonderful career and future ahead of yourself."

It's talent like this that you cannot afford to miss! It forced me to recognize, even as a staff member of the professional music theatre company housed within The Media Theatre, that what "The Vocalist" offers--even more so than one 'winner' who receives a cash prize--is an opportunity for these young singers to have a platform during the summer that allows audiences the privilege (yes, I do mean PRIVILEGE) to see and hear what they are capable of doing. It's moving, it's meaningful, it's memorable. And it's only at The Media Theatre starting July 10.

Please, do yourself a favor and see "The Vocalist". It's better than you can even imagine. Tickets are only $12-15 until the Finals. Get them now at www.mediatheatre.org or call 610-891-0100. You'll be very glad you did and you will want to watch these young singers, applaud for them, and perhaps vote for them online to show your support. And I'm sure they would be happy to sign autographs--Who knows? One day, you'll be able to say "I saw them before they won their Tony or Grammy Award at The Media Theatre!"
