Get Fit: Fall into Fitness
A Media fitness instructor offers 5 tips to help you ramp up your exercise routine as we head into the Fall.
Whether we like it or not, it’s time to flip our closets from bathing suits and shorts, to make room for the sweaters and jeans. But, just because you’ll be showing less skin, doesn’t have to mean hiding the extra "holiday" pounds under the bulky clothing. Experts say now is the time to rethink and renew your fitness program, so you can ring in the New Year in great shape.
Chrissie Sharpless is a fitness instructor and the manager at in Media. She says it’s the perfect time of year to jumpstart your exercise plan and create good habits now, so we follow them through the hectic, food-filled holiday season. Sharpless offers five ways you can get your goals going.
Just Add Exercise

"You can incorporate extra activities into your normal routine. Rake the leaves and take long walks. Go outdoors, keep moving, and take advantage of the Fall weather. It’s the best season to do it," Sharpless says.
Beat the Darkness

Just because it’s getting dark earlier doesn’t mean you have to stop working out. Wear light clothing and reflectors, and stay on well-lit streets.
If you’re more comfortable indoors, Sharpless suggests checking out a new class or gym.
"It’s a good time to join a new class you might have wanted to try, or go to a gym and take a look. Many offer discounted rates this time of year," Sharpless says.
Watch Your Diet
We are entering the time of year when we’re constantly surrounded by a cornucopia (quite literally) of goodies. From Halloween candy to Christmas cookies, not to mention the Thanksgiving feasts, and holiday parties chock-full of high-calorie munchies and sweet treats.
"It’s all about modification of your diet. Lower your carb intake and sugars too. Drink more water, and try to take advantage of Fall’s fresh fruits and veggies," Sharpless says.
Enter an Event
"There are tons of events going on throughout the area, from now through November. Make it a family activity to enter a 5K charity walk or fun run. The weather’s better in the Fall for these events because it’s cool out," Sharpless says.

Sleep on It
"Now that the kids are back in school, try to go to bed early. It’s a good time of year to create routine sleep patterns for your family. People who are sleep-deprived are more likely to eat more carbs during the day to stay awake, but they won’t burn the calories. Before the holiday stress comes, set your schedule now," Sharpless says.
