At Maris Grove, Fitness is Fun!
Resident Jim Ritchie enjoys working out with the help of Fitness Coordinator Cameron Bradley in the newly expanded fitness center.

When the doors to Maris Grove's newly renovated fitness center opened, residents couldn't wait to step inside.
The center has doubled in size, offering more room, more equipment, and more ways to stay active at the Erickson Senior Living community in the Brandywine Valley of Pennsylvania.
Space to move and socialize

The fitness center now features a wider range of state-of-the-art equipment, including a rowing machine, a Peloton-style cycle, and NuStep recumbent cross-trainers--a resident favorite.
Every newcomer begins with a complimentary orientation. "We show them how to use the equipment safely and tailor exercises to their goals," says Fitness Manager John O'Donnell. "From there, we can provide additional support, if needed. If someone has a question or needs an adjustment, we're right here to help."

With more space to move and socialize, the fitness center has transformed into a true community hub.
"The space is welcoming, easy to use, and social," says O'Donnell. "We've seen a 75% increase in usage each month since the renovation--people are coming in greater numbers and at all times of day."
He adds, "You'll often see groups of friends or couples working out together. They support one another and keep each other motivated."
A range of classes
Group fitness remains one of the most popular ways residents stay active. From water aerobics and Zumba to chair yoga and tai chi, Maris Grove's class schedule has something for everyone.
Thanks to the new studio space upstairs, O'Donnell and his team have been able to expand their
class offerings.
"Our strength and conditioning class can draw 45 to 50 people," says O'Donnell. "Cardio drumming and tai chi are also favorites."
Whether residents are beginners or seasoned athletes, Maris Grove's trained fitness staff ensure safety and comfort. "We always offer modifications so everyone feels supported," he explains. "The goal is to build confidence as well as strength and flexibility."
Staying on track
Jim Ritchie, who moved to Maris Grove in 2021 from the Pittsburgh, Pa., area, is just one of many residents who have discovered a new passion for fitness. "I didn't have much of a routine before moving," he says. "I had an elliptical sitting in my living room, but I rarely used it. I knew I needed to exercise more."
After settling in, Jim stopped by the fitness center and met Fitness Coordinator Cameron Bradley, who also serves as a personal trainer. "I signed up for personal training sessions and have been doing them every Monday and Thursday ever since," says Jim. "Having Cam on my calendar keeps me accountable--and the results have been amazing."
Personal training sessions are available at Maris Grove for a nominal fee. "It's a great value compared to what you'd pay elsewhere," notes O'Donnell.
"We work on strength and balance, and it's made a big difference," says Jim. "I look better and I feel better. It's made a major difference in my life and my disposition."
Jim adds that he has directed a 50-voice choir at Maris Grove for the last three years--thanks to his personal training. "Given the physicality of directing, I give Cam much of the credit for me being able to keep this going," he says.
What's more, Jim and Bradley have become close friends. Jim, a retired minister, officiated his wedding!
Diving in
Just steps from the fitness center, Maris Grove's climate-controlled pool offers residents year-round access to aquatics classes and recreational swimming.
"Our water aerobics classes are very popular," says O'Donnell. "The buoyancy of the water makes exercise easier on joints, and it's a great social outlet too."
Jim, who also plays water volleyball, notes that the pool adds variety to his exercise routine. "It's not just about fitness--it's fun," he says. "You get your heart rate up and laugh the whole time."
Supporting well-being
Perfectly blending fitness and fun, it's evident that the exercise equipment and classes at Maris Grove support residents' physical and social well-being.
"Our main goal is to help residents stay healthy, active, and engaged so they can enjoy all that Maris Grove has to offer," O'Donnell says. "The fitness center isn't just a place to work out; it's a place to connect. It's a reflection of how Maris Grove strives to help residents live better lives."
