WWII Vet Raises Navy Flag For Branch's Birthday At Delco Govt. Center

Middletown Township's Paul Jones joined the U.S. Navy at 17 in 1944.

The United States Navy was founded on Oct. 13, 1775 in Philadelphia. To commemorate the Navy's founding, a Delaware County World War II veteran raised the Navy flag outside the county's government center Wednesday morning.

Paul Jones, of Middletown Township, joined the Navy at 17 years old in 1944 and became an anti-aircraft gunner assigned to a landing ship tank, which transported and deployed troops, vehicles and supplies. Jones partook in missions in the Mediterranean in the European Theater, including the Southern France invasion in August 1944.

Later, Jones' ship was sent to the Pacific Theater to give troops on the Marshall Islands and Guam munitions. Jones' ship and crew participated in various missions in the months following the conclusion of WWII.
