New Nazareth Mayoral Candidate Emerges

A third candidate has applied for Nazareth's vacant mayoral post. Borough Council will choose an interim mayor on Monday.

After a two-hour discussion about the future of the Nazareth Boro-Park Pool at Thursday night's work session, the Nazareth Borough Council turned its attention to the borough's vacant mayoral post.

And now a new candidate has emerged.

Council President Dan Chiavaroli updated residents about the process to fill the seat vacated by the resignation of Mayor Fred Daugherty Jr. two weeks ago.

And the surprise of the night was the fact that someone else has joined Councilman Jack Herbst and Vigilance Hose Co. president Carl Strye Jr. as those seeking office.

"We have three candidates and I want to recognize their names," Chiavaroli said. "The council has their resumes and letters of intent. Monday night we will let them make a comment about why they are running."

Chiavaroli pointed out Herbst and Strye, who was sitting in the audience.

But he first mentioned a candidate who just filed by Thursday's deadline.

He's Lance Colondo, manager of the First Niagara Bank in Bethlehem Township.

In January, First Niagara Bank made a $5,000 donation to the Nazareth Area Chamber of Commerce, in which Colondo made some remarks.

The mayoral pick the council will make Monday could complicate the primary and general elections, depending on whether Herbst or Strye is selected.
