Driver Escapes Injury In Roof Collapse At The Inn At Lambertville Station

An outside roof at the Inn collapsed Thursday night, crushing a box truck beneath its weight, fire officials said.

LAMBERTVILLE, N.J. — A truck driver escaped injury Thursday night when an outside roof collapsed on his vehicle at the Inn At Lambertville Station.

Rescue Engine 17 from the Lambertville Fire Company responded to the scene just after 9 p.m. When they arrived, they found a box truck wedged beneath a collapsed outside roof.

After checking for injuries and finding none, the fire company established command and requested Chief 17 and the city's building official respond to the scene. Chief 17 subsequently called in two 50-ton heavy-duty wreckers and one 85-ton rotator from Rob's Towing and Hauling of Bristol.

Notifications were also made to the Hunterdon County Hazmat team and the county's Board of Health, fire officials said.

Following the arrival of the duty officer, who reviewed the transportation paperwork and investigated the truck's bill of lading, a full hazmat response was requested due to information on the truck's cargo provided by the driver.

The hazmat team responded and, with assistance from the fire department, transferred hazardous materials from the damaged truck to another vehicle, the fire company reported.

Engine 17 established a water supply to Rescue Engine 17, which deployed hose line as a precautionary measure. After securing the hazardous materials, the wreckers moved in and lifted the structure to allow crews to safely remove the truck.

By 4 a.m., all equipment had been cleared, and fire units had departed the scene.

Also on location was Lambertville-New Hope Ambulance & Rescue Squad. Lambertville Police Department, Lambertville Office of Emergency Management and Rob's Towing & Hauling.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the collapse.
