NEW HOPE, PA — The Friends of the Delaware Canal have put out a call for volunteers to help cleanup the historic waterway.

After a harsh winter, the 60-mile waterway, which extends from Easton To Bristol, needs some helping hands to clear trash, debris and brush from the towpath, where mules once pulled canal boats loaded with coal to Philadelphia.

Clean-Up Day is scheduled for Saturday, April 11 from 9 a.m. to noon along the entire length of the waterway.

Volunteer help is especially needed along the following segments of the canal: Morrisville from E. Maple Avenue to Ferry Road, Washington Crossing and New Hope from Bowman’s Hill and Thompson-Neely Bridge to Lock 9, and Riegelsville and Williams Township from Mueller’s Store to Wy-Hit-Tuk Park.

Organizers said participants will need to bring gloves, waterproof foot gear, long-handled rakes, grabbing implements and branch snippers. Trash bags will be provided, according to the announcement.

Volunteers interested in joining the cleanup are asked to fill out the event sign-up form and note whether they prefer a specific work area. According to the announcement, organizers will then connect volunteers with the coordinator in that area.

The Friends of the Delaware Canal said anyone seeking more information can contact the organization at 215-862-2021 or friends@fodc.org. The announcement also notes that “clean-ups anytime, anyplace are always appreciated!”
