Mining Halted At New Hope Quarry: Report

The 165-acre quarry in Solebury failed to meet a March deadline to complete required reclamation work.

SOLEBURY, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has halted mining operations at a controversial quarry in Solebury.

The Intelligencer reports that the quarry, owned by New Hope Crushed Stone & Lime Co., failed to meet a March deadline to do required reclamation work there. According to a notice sent last week, the quarry now must stop mining until that work is completed.

The paper reports that the 165-acre quarry has long drawn the ire of neighbors, including the nearby Solebury School, which blamed operations at the quarry for sinkholes on its property.

Lawsuits were filed and the DEP declared the site a nuisance in 2014, which led to the department requiring the reclamation work.
