Norm From 'Cheers' Starring In Upcoming Production At Bucks County Playhouse

A new musical will make its world premiere at the Bucks County Playhouse this fall, and it will feature a familiar face.

NEW HOPE, PA — A new musical will make its world premiere at the Bucks County Playhouse this fall, and it will feature a familiar face. The musical, “Rock and Roll Man: The Alan Freed Story,” will star George Wendt of "Cheers” fame.

The production will open Sept. 12 and run through Oct. 1, with an official opening night on Sept. 16.

Tony nominee Alan Campbell will star as Alan Freed, with Wendt appearing as J. Edgar Hoover. Known to worldwide for his iconic, six-time Emmy-nominated role of Norm on the long-running sitcom “Cheers,” Wendt has also appeared on Broadway in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” “Art,” “Elf” and “Hairspray.

The production uncovers the true story of Alan Freed — the Father of Rock and Roll. It will feature original songs and classic tunes by legends like Little Richard, Frankie Lymon and Screaming Jay Hawkins.

The musical includes a book by Gary Kupper and Larry Marshak with Rose Caiola. Original music and lyrics are by Gary Kupper. “Rock and Roll Man: The Alan Freed Story” will also feature solid gold rock and roll classics from the period. An official song list will be announced soon. Randal Mylar will direct with choreography by Brian Reeder. Musical Director is Dave Keyes. Tim Mackabee is Scenic Designer and Jen Caprio is Costume Designer.

This is the third world premiere production scheduled for Bucks County Playhouse this year. The summer season launched in May with the debut of “Clue: On Stage.”

“Rock and Roll Man: The Alan Freed Story” is being produced at the Playhouse by Robyn Goodman, Alexander Fraser, Stephen Kocis, Josh Fiedler in association with Sharon A. Carr and Caiola Productions.

Tickets are currently on sale and prices range from $40 to $75. There are special rates offered for groups of 10 or more.
