$1M Winner In PA As Historic Mega Millions Jackpot Is Won

A Pennsylvania winner didn't get the jackpot, but they'll still take home a nice pile of cash.

The huge Mega Millions jackpot has been won.

A single ticket holder in South Carolina won the $1.537 billion jackpot in Tuesday's drawing. But there was a lucky winner in Pennsylvania, where someone matched all five white balls to win $1 million. The ticket was sold at the Wawa on Sproul Road in Broomall, Delaware County.

The winning numbers for the Oct. 23 drawing were: 5, 28, 62, 65, 70, and Mega Ball 5.

It was a historic jackpot for Mega Millions, breaking the previous record of $656 million set in March 2012. The monstrous prize led to a frenzy of ticket buying, with 36 people nationwide winning second-place prizes of $1 million.

“The moment we’ve been waiting for finally arrived, and we couldn’t be more excited,” said Gordon Medenica, Lead Director of the Mega Millions Group. “This is truly a historic occasion. We’re so happy for the winner, and we know the South Carolina Education Lottery can’t wait to meet the lucky ticket holder.”

It's possible that lucky winner won't ever be revealed, though. Lottery winners in South Carolina can remain anonymous.

The jackpot had been rolling since July 24, when a California office pool of 11 co-workers shared a $543 million prize.

Eight $1 million winning tickets were sold California, four each in Florida and New York, two each in Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey and Virginia. In addition to Pennsylvania, second-place prize winning tickets were sold in Arizona, the District of Columbia, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio, Texas and Wisconsin.

The jackpot for Friday's drawing has been reset to $40 million.
