2014 a 'Great' Year For Newtown Township: Supervisors Chairman

Last year was a great one for Newtown Township, the Board of Supervisors chairman said in his State of the Township address Wednesday.

Ryan Gallagher, board chairman, said among the bright spots for Newtown Township in 2014 was an improving local economy and an increase in the township’s general fund balance.

Real Estate Transfer Taxes are growing and commercial real estate continues to improve, Gallagher said, adding that new businesses are opening in the township and existing ones are expanding.

Gallagher also highlighted the successes within the township administration, including the Parks and Rec department’s growth of programming and revenue, as well as a $180,000 open space grant for a playground at Veterans Park.

He noted the Newtown Township Police Department responded to more than 14,000 calls and issued more than 2,300 citations. All police cruisers and motorcycle units now have video cameras to ensure both police and public safety.

The township Fire Department responded to more than 1,290 calls, including 544 fire-related emergencies, he said.

Gallagher also laid out some goals for 2015, including a creating a new township website, working towards a comprehensive trail strategy and placing a proactive focus on finding the right solution for the Lockheed Martin site.
