Living Literature Aptly named as the centerpeice of the public library renaissance faire, embraces the woman with its annual re-write of yet another chapter: this year the chapter is Queen Gloriana and the Tournament of Virtues. A quick synposis:The yearly Tournament of Virtues is upon us once again, hosted by her royal majesty Queen Gloriana in remembrance of the Great War of years past. Many knights representing households kingdom wide return to the field to compete for the title of this year‘s champion. A mysterious new comer will also enter the tournament, they too looking for an opportunity to fight for the honor of champion. But who is this masked knight? How will their identity revealed affect the yearly tournament? You will just have to join us and find out!
Based on Edmund Spencer’s literary classic, “Queen Gloriana and the Tournament of Virtures” proves that each man, or women, has the ability to change the destiny of a kingdom!
The Faire rose to new heights in recent years with aerialists and flying birds of prey and this year , as with all in the past, will be better than the last. As recognized by the June National Renaissance Magazine, we are unlike any other faire, and the Renaissance Faire to be at this weekend--perhaps any weekend, but this be our only one of the year. The 19th Annual Village Renaissance Faire boast activities that rival commercial faires that only nobility can afford. And we are never the same, and always better than the year before, because of patrons, partners, and performers like YOU. All will be greeted at the gate entrance with live music through-out the day, and amidst the faireways as one explores our working artisans row, guilded merchants way, food merchants as well as creative wares and activities from around the globe.
The hallmark of our faire remains the open patron interaction between all--performers, merchants, and demonstrators, as we interact, involve and entertain everyone along our faireways, during, and yes, absolutely, we wait around after our shows. Mingle, as if you are part of the faire, because you are, with hundreds of costumed characters, at every bend, corner, and pathway. Try your hand at archery, thrown weapons, and even the path to knighthood. It is only at our faire, that one can change their stars. Partake in our many Quests, for patrons of all ages, and can be honoured by the King and Queen at closing stages and the joust.
Renowned for finding something for everyone, the faire boasts awe-inspiring full contact armored jousting tournaments, heat defying fire breathing, frigid ice blowing, high defying aerialist demonstrations, 16 foot trebuchet demonstrations, and countless other free activities. Games of skill, created especially for you include Rat-a-Pult, Chicken Shot with Giant Slingshots, throwing fits, 10 foot Castle Plunk, Jacob’s ladder and more. The FUN never stops here.
The quest for fun, entertain, and exploration has never been so full, nor so easy. You day will be bustling with jugglers, story tellers, puppeteers, musicians, singers, dancers, sheriffs, villagers, and even some harmless scoundrels welcoming you to a festive day of living history, literature and the arts. Merlin may capture air in his creations of play castles, obstacle courses, and a Human Flail, and the skies may be filled with dragons, trebuchet launchings, and RIOT--the aerialist, but this year, there is even more in the air. But the learn, you will have come and see, what may PREY upon upon you. Besides the sights, the other senses will be filled not only with sweet music, but also the sensational scents of foods from the Renaissance period. Feast like Royalty on a variety of food from the past and future (thanks to Merlin) from juicy roasted turkey legs, steak on a stick, and peasant dogs to corn-cob, cheese steaks, and with a finishing touch of smoothies, pretzels, cupcakes and glorious handheld snacks.
Despite the grandeur and scope of the faire, we offer sheltered dining, music and dance stages, as well as a fully covered series of pavilions to allow the show to go in all kinds of weather. Our magical powers and sweet blessings have allowed to continue and hold court and festivities in all weather--even hurricanes. Sit back and enjoy belly dancers, medieval dancers, maypole dancers, and even a dance stage of celtic focus as we honor our irish neighbors. On the chess board and throughout the village are wizards, Galileo, jugglers, stilt walkers, fire breathers and more to provide merriment for all ages. Even one who will tie patrons in a Human knot--it is quite a site to see them try to unwind themselves.
To have the most glorious of time, we suggest a willingness to partake, or at the very least, observe, because come reign or shine, you will be treated and enticed by an interactive, friendly, and impressive collection of shows, education, and entertainment right here, in our backyard. Multiple and varied performances are held every half-hour, some on the quarter hour, so there is no idle moment, if you are so inclined, yet, still spread evenly throughout the day and across the village of Penns Park, on the donated Middletown Grange Fairgrounds. Please explore our website and 16 page color guide available on-line to see why people say the following about our faire.
