MDR1 Gene in Rough Coated Collies and other breeds

Rough Coated Collies and MDR1

I have been fostering a rough coated Collie for the past eight weeks and have learned some information that I was unaware of previously.

Rough coates carry the MDR1 gene, which is a deficiency in Cortisol. Due to that deficiency, unless otherwise tested, some medications and drugs may be toxic. Interceptor is the only heartworm prevention that is safely used for rough coates. There are also many other drug that could have a toxic impact upon a rough coat so be aware of what would be suitable for your collie. Below is a link that explains more about the MDR1 gene. Also, a little sunscreen or soothing cream may be needed on their nose due to some chafing.

Nevertheless, Collies are a beautiful breed of dog and while not a guard dog, very protective of their family and all around a wonderful loyal companion.
