Start the School Year with the Right Homework Routine
Starting the school year with a routine homework schedule.
It is that time of year where kids are returning to school, yet they are still stuck in their summer habits. Two of our kids returned to school today and realized soon after the final bell with their first homework assignments that they were back in class. Creating the right environment for their success is integral to helping both seasonal transitioning and developing lifelong skills they can use into the future.
First, we have cleared off a table in our dining room where they have a flat surface to put down their books and papers and comfortably dig into their assignments. Designating an area for them to have a study zone is an essential first step. We have limited their “screen time” to 45 minutes a day including computers, televisions, and ”i”everythings to ensure limited distractions and create a new school year schedule. While they are at the dining room table, there are no screens on in the house to limit distractions.
We are always nearby for the occasional questions, but make it a rule to not do our children’s homework. This is their time to improve study skills and we want them to practice the habit of thinking problems out on their own.

Even with their busy extra-curricular schedules, we set aside time for all of our children to complete their homework. For the extended book report projects, we make sure that they create a game plan to conquer the assignment over a few days or a weekend.
While this is a transition for all, parents can take this homework assignment to task by creating a homework routine for their children.
