British author, Vince Hunt uncovers the scorched earth stories that reveal the history and human tragedy of this remote region high above the Arctic Circle.

Here, the Germans tried to forcibly evacuate sixty thousand people but thousands fled to hide in sub-zero temperatures. Some were shot dead only days before the war ended, while Soviet prisoners too weak to work were dumped in death camps, some even driven to cannibalism.

Told for the first time, this is the story of obliterated communities, devastation and unspeakable cruelty. Just as the scarred landscape is yet to heal so too are the haunted minds of those who survived.
