Bucks Co. Community College To Offer Forensic Training For Nurses

The special new forensic training teaches nurses how to examine victims of sexual assault.

NEWTOWN, PA — A special new forensic training program at Bucks County Community College will empower nurses to effectively examine victims of sexual assault.

The 40-hour course uniquely connects medical and legal specialties, the school said.

"The care is specialized in the collection of evidence, maintaining chain of command, legal process, identification of victims and those in need of crisis intervention, as well as knowing proper resources for the victim’s care and recovery," said Cheyenne Rothermel, instructor for the course, in a statement issued by the school announcing the course.

Rothermel added that there is high demand for experts in this field due to the high turnover. Because nurses with this speciality must frequently deal with highly traumatic situations, burnout is comomn.

"This specialty calls for a professional who can care for and show empathy to people who have been brutally violated, showing compassion that goes above and beyond the call of duty," she said in the statement.
