NEWTOWN TOWNSHIP, PA — Police are urging residents who may have dropped off mail this week in the outside collection boxes at the Newtown Post Office to monitor their accounts for cases of fraud.

Sometime overnight from Monday, Sept. 25 to Tuesday, Sept. 26, police said someone pried open the two blue collection boxes at 20 Terry Drive and stole an unknown amount of mail from inside the containers.

In the past, police in the township and the borough have investigated thefts of personal checks from the same two boxes which were washed (figures altered) and cashed for significantly higher amounts.

“We suggest that if you utilized these boxes after business hours on Monday, Sept. 25 you monitor your accounts closely and cancel any personal checks that have been mailed,” police said.

“With the intent to safeguard your personal and financial information, especially outside of normal business hours, we suggest bringing any mail containing personal checks inside the post office,” police said.
