NORTHAMPTON TOWNSHIP, PA —What a way to wrap up an incredibly successful season for Council Rock South students in the band program.

First, on Sunday, April 23 the Indoor Winter Guard won the 2023 Scholastic-A Weir Division at the Mid-Atlantic Indoor Network Championships. With a score of 87.68, South edged out a highly competitive field of 10 other scholastic winter guard units.

This year’s show,"What We Are Made Of," featured original music by John Burns. The cast unrolls its DNA blueprint and brings its chromosomes to life spinning special "X" poles, as well as traditional flags, rifles and sabres. In the end they raise the question, "Are We Greater Than The Sum Of Our Genetics?"

This was South’s first championship in the advanced scholastic A category with credit to the staff, including John Burns, Lauren Moffatt Burns, Dr. Carlee Buckingham, and Joanna Eyr.

The Council Rock South Indoor Percussion unit also wrapped up its season with a win at the
Tournament Indoor Association’s Regions 3 Championships on Saturday, April 29 at Penncrest
High School. With a score of 90.29, South bested four other teams from southeastern Pennsylvania to win the gold medal. Their 2023 production was entitled, "The Do-Over Button,"
which featured a fictitious product in the style of a TV infomercial.

The South Indoor Percussion team is under the direction of Jeff Moyer and assistant directors Jimmy Baldridge and Jacob Cantor. Visual production was created by Matt Norse. All staff members of the indoor percussion team are graduates of Council Rock South.

And finally, the Concert Jazz Band and Lab Band received "Outstanding" ratings on their performances on Friday, April 28 at the Neshaminy Jazz Festival. Jazz Band Director Keith Chasin and Lab Band director Mark Filosi led the jazz bands to a successful season.

Although this wraps up the jazz festival season, both groups have one remaining performance on Thursday, June 1 in Northampton.

There is no rest, however, for the students in the Council Rock South band program.

The students and staff are gearing up for the US Bands Group 3 Open National Championship with student leader training, percussion and color guard meetings on May 11 and the first full marching band rehearsal on May 30.
