Counterfeit Money Passed At Businesses In Newtown Township: Police

According to police, incidents were reported on March 6 at the Village at Newtown Shopping Center.

NEWTOWN TOWNSHIP, PA — Police are investigating at least four reports of counterfeit money being passed at businesses in Newtown Township.

According to police, incidents were reported on March 6 at MOD Pizza, Chipotle, Chopt and at Crumbl Cookies, all located in the Village at Newtown Shopping Center.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.

Here are some suggestions to help identify fake currency:

  • Feel the paper. Move your finger across the paper. It should feel slightly rough to the touch as a result of the printing process and the unique composition of the paper
  • Tilt the note. Denominations of $10 and higher have color shifting ink and a numeral in the lower right hand corner. On the current style of note, the color should change from copper to green.
  • The $100 note includes two new security features that can be checked by tilting the note - the color shifting bell in the ink well and the 3-D security ribbon. The security ribbon contains images of bells and ribbons that should shift as the note is tilted.

Police encourage business owners to educate themselves on counterfeit money by watching the embedded video below. Anyone suspecting counterfeit currency is asked to contact the police department.
