Dangerous Heat Through Tuesday, Prepare For 105 Heat Index: NWS

Prepare for another two days of dangerous heat in Eastern Pennsylvania, the National Weather Service says.

Hot enough yet? Don't expect a respite from the heat just yet.

It's going to feel like 102 degrees Monday across the Philadelphia region with the heat index, the National Weather Service warns. And it's not getting any better Tuesday, when heat index values at 105 degrees are possible.

In fact, it's going to stay dangerously hot through Tuesday night, the NWS said in an excessive heat warning. The excessive heat warning extends through 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Expect heat index values "up to 105 due to temperatures in the middle to upper 90s and dewpoints in the upper 60s to lower 70s," the NWS said. Even though the excessive heat warning is schedule to expire Tuesday night, heat indices may exceed 100 degrees on Wednesday as well.

"The heat may be life threatening to the elderly and those in poor health, due to prolonged exposure without air conditioning," the NWS warned. "The heat and humidity may cause heat stress during outdoor exertion or extended exposure."

High temperatures will remain in the 90s through at least Thursday.

Just in case you're feeling down by this weather, we offer you this fun flashback to 3.5 months ago.

But in all seriousness, here are some safety tips from the NWS:

  • When possible, reschedule strenuous outdoor activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
  • Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.
  • If you must work outside, schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.
  • Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency.
  • An Excessive Heat Warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously hot temperatures will occur. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely.
  • Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. This is especially true during warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
