'Documentaries On Campus' Film Series Starts Thursday At BCCC

Bucks County Community College will present Documentaries on Campus, a monthly film series as part of its Bucks Live! cultural events lineup.

The DoC screenings, which take place in the Kevin and Sima Zlock Performing Arts Center on the Newtown campus, feature subjects designed to inform and engage the community about a variety of subjects. Each film is shown at 12:15 p.m. and 7 p.m., and several screenings are followed by a Q&A session with the director or a subject from the film.

Here is the schedule:

• The first DoC is “Hired Gun: The Untold Stories Behind Your Favorite Musicians” on Thursday, September 20. The 2016 film, directed by Fran Stine, provides an inside look at session and touring musicians who are hired by famous artists like Metallica, KISS, and Billy Joel. Admission is free.
• On Thursday, October 4, DoC presents “The Diary of Immaculée.” The 2006 film tells the inspiring story of how Immaculée Ilibagiza escaped genocide in Rwanda in 1994, when her family was brutally murdered during a killing spree that lasted three months and claimed the lives of nearly a million people. Tickets for the 12:15 p.m. screening are $5. Tickets for the 7 p.m. screening, which includes a Q&A session with director Peter LeDonne, are $10.
• Another 20th-century genocide is revisited on Thursday, November 8, when DoC presents “Kinderblock 66: Return to Buchenwald.” Directed by Rob Cohen, the 2013 film tells the story of several Holocaust survivors as they visit the notorious Nazi concentration camp on the 65th anniversary of their liberation. Tickets for the 12:15 p.m. showing are $5. Tickets for the 7 p.m. screening, which includes a Q&A session with Holocaust survivor Alex Moskovic who is featured in the film, are $10.
• The final DoC of the semester is “Bill Evans – Time Remembered” on Thursday, December 13. The 2015 documentary, directed by Bruce Spiegel, chronicles the life and music of the pianist and composer, from his New Jersey childhood to his tragic death from drug addiction at age 51. The film features contributions by artists such as Jack DeJohnette, Tony Bennett, and Gene Lees.

Tickets for both the 12:15 p.m. and 7 p.m. showing are $5. The evening event includes a Q&A session with Joel Zelnik, pianist and bandleader who was a contemporary of Bill Evans, has entertained five presidents, and performs around the world. In addition, VIP tickets for the 7 p.m. screening are available for $15, which includes a preshow reception with live music and light hors d’oeuvres.
