EF1 Tornado Struck Newtown/Wrightstown: National Weather Service

Packing winds of up to 105 mph at its peak, the tornado followed a path from Wrightstown, through Newtown Township and into Newtown Borough.

NEWTOWN-WRIGHTSTOWN, PA — The National Weather Service has confirmed that it was an EF-1 Tornado that struck parts of Wrightstown Township, Newtown Township and Newtown Borough on Saturday evening, April 1.

The twister, with peak winds of between 95 and 105 mph, followed a 3.9 mile path 200 yards wide beginning at 6:46 p.m. in Wrightstown Township, according to the National Weather Service.

According to the NWS, the tornado developed as a line of storms moved through Lower Bucks County. Several trees were uprooted and snapped on the south side of Wrightstown Township.

As the tornado progressed southeast near Swamp Road, additional tree damage occurred in residential areas as well as on the campus of the Bucks County Community College, according to the NWS.

Strong Winds Uproot Trees, Damage Roof At Village At Newtown

The maximum estimated wind speed was associated with damage observed at the Village at Newtown Shopping Center where a roof facade was blown down and trees uprooted. Additional tree damage was observed in Newtown Borough with the continuous path of damage ending in the vicinity of the Newtown Cemetery.

The National Weather Service was assisted by Bucks County Emergency Management, Newtown Fire and Rescue and Lou Ruh for assistance with the survey.
