Fatal DUI Crash, More Mail Stolen: Newtown Township Police Report

Police also investigated a road rage incident, a computer pop-up that cost a resident $200K and conducted a truck safety detail.

NEWTOWN TOWNSHIP, PA — The Newtown Township Police Department responded to the following calls between Nov. 19 and Nov. 30, including a fatal DUI crash on Thanksgiving Day, a a road rage incident and someone trying to purchase a firearm in their name.

November 19

  • At approximately 4 p.m. police conducted a traffic stop on a GMC Envoy operator for committing a vehicle code violation in the area of Worthington Mill and Swamp Road. Upon speaking with the operator, the officer detected the strong odor of burnt marijuana. The operator was unable to perform field sobriety tests satisfactorily and was placed under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence. Suspected narcotics were also discovered and seized as evidence. Charges are pending blood evidence results.

  • At approximately 10:45 p.m. police were dispatched to the U.S. Post Office on Terry Drive for the report of a theft from the outdoor mailbox. The investigation is ongoing at this time.

November 23

  • Shortly before 8 a.m., police were dispatched to the area of the Newtown Bypass and Penns Trail for the report of a road rage incident that resulted in property damage to a vehicle. As a result of the investigation, one subject was issued a citation for disorderly conduct.
  • At approximately 9:15 a.m. a Newtown Township resident contacted police to report a fraud involving someone attempting to purchase a firearm in their name. The investigation is ongoing at this time.
  • A Newtown Township resident contacted police at 11:25 a.m. to report a package theft from their front porch. The total value of loss was approximately $50.
  • Police were dispatched to TD Bank on West Road at 1:35 p.m. for the report of a fraud involving someone attempting to pass a fraudulent check. The investigation is ongoing at this time.

  • At approximately 9:40 p.m. police investigated a two-vehicle fatal traffic accident on the Newtown Bypass in the area of Sycamore Street. As a result of the investigation, one of the operators was placed under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence. Charges are pending blood evidence results.

November 25

  • At 3 p.m. police were dispatched to Provident Bank on Penns Trail for the report of a fraud that occurred on November 23. The investigation is ongoing at this time.
  • A Newtown Township resident contacted police at approximately 4:30 p.m. to report a fraud. The resident advised that he was defrauded of over $200,000 after a pop-up message led to his computer and bank accounts being compromised. The investigation is ongoing at this time.

November 27

  • At approximately 6:30 p.m. police were dispatched to a parking lot located on Pheasant Run for the report of a theft from a vehicle. The investigation is ongoing at this time.

November 28

  • At approximately 7:30 p.m. police conducted a vehicle pursuit and subsequent traffic stop on a Hyundai sedan operator for committing several vehicle code violations in the area of the Newtown Bypass and Buck Road. The vehicle was being operated with extensive damage and matched the description of a vehicle that had fled from a hit-and-run accident in Northampton Township shortly prior. Upon contact with theoperator, the officer detected the strong odor of burnt marijuana. The operator was unable to perform field sobriety tests satisfactorily and was placed under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence. Suspected narcotics were also discovered and seized as evidence. DUI and possession charges are pending evidence results, and the operator will be charged with fleeing from police as well.

November 29

  • Shortly after midnight, police conducted a traffic stop on a Nissan pick-up truck operator for committing a vehicle code violation in the area of the Newtown Bypass and South State Street. Upon contact with the operator, the officer detected the odor of alcohol. The operator was unable to perform field sobriety tests satisfactorily and was placed under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence. Charges are pending blood evidence results.

November 30

  • At approximately 12:30 p.m. a Newtown Township resident contacted police to report a scam. The resident received a text message indicating fraudulent activity on her Bank of America account. The resident found this strange since she doesn’t have an account with Bank of America and called the phone number that was provided. She then spoke with someone who demanded she withdraw all of her money and transfer it to digital currency or be arrested by US Marshalls. Police confirmed that this is a known scam and advise residents to be wary of such texts and phone calls. Do not engage the scammers, and do not provide them with any personal information.
  • The Newtown-Makefield Truck Enforcement Unit conducted a commercial vehicle safety detail on the Newtown Bypass at Lindenhurst Road. The unit is made up of officers from this department, the Newtown Borough Police Department, and the Upper Makefield Township Police Department. During the detail, 13 trucks were stopped and inspected, and four warnings were issued for violations that were found.
  • At approximately 8:35 p.m. a Newtown Township resident contacted police to report a theft from their residence. The investigation is ongoing at this time.
