'Fiddler on the Roof' Opens Thursday at The Newtown Theatre

Fiddler on the Roof opens Thursday at the Newtown Theatre. The production, performed by Newtown Arts Company will run through Aug. 13.

Newtown Arts Company provides this synopsis of the production:

Winner of 9 Tony Awards after debuting in 1965, the show was developed by bookwriter Joseph Stein and songwriters Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, and produced for Broadway by Harold Prince and directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins. Touching audiences worldwide with its humor, warmth and honesty, this universal show is a staple of the musical theatre canon.

Set in the little village of Anatevka, the story centers on Tevye, a poor dairyman, and his five daughters. With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye tries to protect his daughters and instill them with tradition in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Tzarist Russia. Rich in historical and ethnic detail, Fiddler on the Roof’s universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness.

“Fiddler on the Roof is a reminder of the importance of our family and traditions in our lives,” said director Kathy Junkins, of Yardley.

Performances of Fiddler on the Roof are one week only, starting Thursday, Aug. 7 and going through Wednesday, Aug. 13. There is no show on Monday, Aug. 11.

Showtimes are Thursday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. On Friday and Saturday, performances begin at 8 p.m. A Sunday matinee will be held at 3 p.m.
