Five Local 5Ks Worth Your Time

Get fit and support a good cause at the same time.

Spring is upon us and with it comes, thankfully, more time outside. That means there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor exercise. If running is your sport of choice, you’ll be glad to know that there are several local races worth your time.

Whether you’re an experienced runner or a newbie looking to get fit, you can do it without going far from home. So get out those sneakers and break a sweat – all while supporting a good cause at the same time.

Here’s Newtown Patch’s list of 5Ks upcoming worth your time (in order by date).

1. Run Walk Roll for Brain Injury, Sat., April 2:  The Run Walk Roll, which takes place at Tyler Park starting at 10 a.m., supports the Brain Injury Association of America and Camp Cranium.  These organizations are focused on preventing brain injury and improving the quality of life for people with brain injury. There will be a 5K timed race as well as a one-mile walk and a one-mile bike roll for kids. Registration is $30. To register online, click here. 2. Council Rock March of Dimes Run, Sat. April 9: The inaugural March of Dimes race organized by Council Rock will start at 9 a.m. at Council Rock High School South. The day will feature both a 5K race and a one-mile walk. The registration fee is $25 and event proceeds will benefit the March of Dimes, an organization that works to prevent premature births. 3. Run a Muck, Sat. May 21: This isn’t your average 5K. This race, just over the river at Washington Crossing Park in Titusville, NJ, promises to be a memorable run. The course features tire obstacles, river crossings, walls, ropes, and of course, mud. You can race individually, with a partner, or as part of a four-person team. Costumes are optional. There will be washing and changing stations that you can use following the race so you don't have to travel in muddy clothes. Registration is $50 a person and closes May 15. 4. Run Over Cancer, Sat. July 2: The third annual Run Over Cancer 5K is part of Newtown’s First Fourth Celebration. It starts at 9 a.m. at The race benefits Fund a Cure for Pancreatic Cancer, a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing awareness of pancreatic cancer and advocating for increased federal funding for pancreatic cancer research. Registration is $30 through June 27 and is $35 after that. Click here to register. You can also register the day of the race starting at 8 a.m.

5. Revolutionary Run, Mon. July 4: This will be the 31st Revolutionary Run, which take place at scenic Washington Crossing Park, PA. There’s a 5K race, as well as a 10K race for those seeking a tougher challenge.
