Former Newtown Man ID'ed As Princeton Panera Gunman

Scott Mielentz, 56, formerly of Newtown, has been identified as the gunman involved in an hours-long standoff at Panera in Princeton.

A former Newtown resident has been identified by the New Jersey Attorney General's Office as the gunman involved in an hours-long standoff Tuesday at the Panera in Princeton.

According to the Attorney General's office, the gunman has been identified as Scott Mielentz, 56. He formerly lived in Newtown and most recently resided in Lawrenceville, N.J., authorities said.

Mielentz died after a more than 5-hour standoff at the Princeton restaurant. The state Attorney General's Office confirmed that Mielentz was shot dead by police after hours of negotiations.

The ordeal led to evacuations at Princeton University and neighboring buildings as well as a shelter-in-place at nearby schools.

The Attorney General's Shooting Response Team is investigating the circumstances of the shooting.
