Get in Shape for Summer at Bucks Boot Camp

Morning and evening sessions for Bucks Adventure Boot Camp start March 14 and 15.

If you’re like a lot of us, you may have put on a few extra pounds over the winter.

Between being stuck indoors and indulging in one too many comfort meals, you may be in need of a spring shape up.

Megan Sullivan Lupo can help. She heads Bucks Adventure Boot Camp, a four-week intensive cross-training exercise program for women.

“You name it, we do it,” said Lupo. She does everything from relay races to weights, sit-ups to hikes, and more to get her students in shape. “Every day is something different. There hasn’t been the same workout in five years.”

Boot camp is great exercise for all fitness levels, Lupo said.

“It works for someone who’s not very fit to those that are extremely fit,” she said. Many women find the boot camp to be an excellent way to jumpstart an exercise and weight loss program, she added.

The group setting doesn’t hinder those at a higher level, she noted.  “A new person may be working on their form, while someone else is doing the exercise with weights.”

As many as 26 participants can join a session, but Lupo said the ideal group is 15 to 20 participants. Age range is anywhere from 18 to 60, but most woman are in their 20s to 40s.

The results from the boot camp are noticeable. Some participants have lost as much as 100 pounds over the course of several sessions. Exercise is combined with good nutrition to achieve those kind of results. “We do a lot of work with nutrition,” Lupo said.

But it’s not just about the number on the scale. Campers finish the program feeling more fit and toned.  “Inches (lost) are much more important than the scale,” she said.

Lupo meets with each new boot camper prior to the first class. She’ll do a pre-camp evaluation, take body measurements, and body fat calculations. That way progress is easily measurable.

Not only do campers get a great workout in, but it’s also an opportunity to socialize. “It’s very supportive. We have a lot of laughs, we go out to coffee afterwards."

Lupo started the camp five years ago.

“My lifelong love of fitness turned into a business for me. I never liked going to gym,” she said. And to this day, she hasn’t had to resort to an indoor treadmill because the boot camp meets year round.

“We’re out all winter. Most of the regulars say they’d rather do it now than in July because we warm up very quickly.”

The next session of boot camp starts March 14. It meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at Tyler State Park from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

There’s also an evening session that starts March 15. It meets Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Newtown Elementary at 6:30 p.m.

Lupo said it’s an ideal time to get in shape for summer. “People wait way too long for their spring shape up. This is this time to do it.”
