WASHINGTON CROSSING, PA — The Emancipation Proclamation freed enslaved people in the Confederate states. It took until June 19, 1865 for Union troops to arrive in Galveston, Texas to enforce the proclamation and ensure the freedom of those people who were enslaved. Slavery as an institution did not end in the United States as a whole until the ratification of the 13th Amendment in December, 1865.

In honor of Juneteenth, Washington Crossing Historic Park will host several free events and activities on Sunday, June 23 from 3 to 7 p.m. Visitors will learn about the contributions of Black American soldiers during the Revolutionary War and Civil War as well as what Juneteenth is and why its legacy is important today.
