Letters to My Congressman (16)

Paying For What Should Be Free

I refuse on principle to pay for something which I believe should be offered free to constituents. I believe that since we, the people, pay your salary with our tax dollars to represent us, you should be conducting free town halls open to all constituents to find out, for example, what the state of our nation is.

So I was thankful that the free press, which the leader of your Republican Party (supported by both you and Vladimir Putin) continually and just recently called the “Enemy of the People”, is still alive and well in Bucks County. I had to read there what you said about the state of our nation to the paying members of the Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce.

Since I do not believe the continual charges the leader of the Republican Party hurls at the free press; namely, that they are filled with “fake news” (an ironic charge indeed coming from a compulsive pathological liar), I can assert with high confidence that what I read there conveyed what you believe to be the state of our union.

What was shocking to me was that you failed to address the most critical issues facing our nation today and ones which are most worrisome to thousands of people in your congressional district. Yes, you failed to mention at all the frontal attack your Republican president has just launched against our constitution with his phony declaration of a border security emergency. This is an attack which strikes at the heart of the your legislative power so clearly defined in Article 1 of our constitution, as I mentioned last week to you.

Aside from this critical constitutional crisis that you failed to even mention, you also failed to reference the astounding fact that recently came to light that your former organization, the FBI, had opened a counter-intelligence case against the man you, your Republican Party and Vladimir Putin helped to elect. Your FBI claimed that there was ample evidence to inquire whether this man, who just recently attacked our constitution in a fascist-like attempt to usurp legislative power, was an asset of the Russian government.

It astounds me that you failed to mention these two issues that so profoundly rock the very foundations of our democracy in your address to the business people gathered at this paid event.

But in a way, I am not surprised, because it seems to me that you, like so many other quiet and complicit Republicans, have made a bargain with this president so that your partisan issues could be taken care of, despite how much damage this administration is causing the people, our environment, and our democracy. I am sure though the business people who received their tax breaks in the tax scam you supported are quite content with their large tax refunds and like you, look the other way when our constitution is attacked or charges of Russian collusion are raised at the highest levels. (Meanwhile, ordinary Americans are now coming to realize how puny their tax refunds are this year. Thanks for looking out for the “little guys” in Levittown.)

I hope that you put your country first this Tuesday when the Democrats put forward a bill against this faux emergency declaration. Please vote with the Democrats to strike down this attack on our constitution. I also hope you will schedule a real live free town hall with your constituents soon so you can hear their many loud voices expressing fear for our democracy. Many here, who do not wish to pay to hear you, realize that the state of our nation is not strong, but threatened to its very core by the man you so recklessly helped elect to the most powerful position of President of the United States.
