Macy's, Kmart, Sears Closing 15 Pennsylvania Stores

Kmart, Sears and Macy's on Wednesday announced they were closing multiple stores in Pennsylvania.

Fifteen major department stores in Pennsylvania will close in 2017. Kmart, Sears and Macy's on Wednesday announced they were closing multiple locations, amounting to a total of 15 in Pennsylvania between the three chains. Kmart will close six Pennsylvania stores. Sears will shutter three. Macy's is closing six stores, including locations in Bucks and Montgomery counties.

Sears, which owns Kmart, said it is closing 150 stores by the spring, part of a "difficult but necessary step as we take actions to strengthen the company’s operations and fund its transformation," the company said in a statement.

Macy's announced Wednesday it will close a total of 68 stores across the country in order to save money, reinvest it in e-commerce and give a smaller number of stores a better customer experience, the company said in an announcement. All the Pennsylvania locations will close by the end of 2017.

Disappointing holiday sales were reported at all department stores nationwide, as well as declines in stock prices, just before the closures were announced.

Sears said many of the locations slated to close have "struggled with their financial performance for years and we have kept them open to maintain local jobs and in the hopes that they would turn around."

"But in order to meet our objective of returning to profitability, we have to make tough decisions and will continue to do so, which will give our better performing stores a chance at success," according to a statement from the company.

  • 5820 Shaffer Road, Dubois
  • 1320 E Grandview Blvd., Erie
  • 1890 Fruitville Pike, Lancaster
  • 5600 Carlisle Pike US 11, Mechanicsburg
  • 120 Mall Blvd., Monroeville
  • 100 Cross Roads Plaza, Mt. Pleasant

Here are the Sears stores in Pennsylvania closing:

  • 1 Susquehanna Valley Mall Dr., Sellinsgrove
  • 1500 Mall Run Road, Uniontown
  • 3595 Capital City Mall, Camp Hill

Here are the Macy's stores in Pennsylvania closing:

  • Neshaminy, Bensalem
  • Shenango Valley, Hermitage
  • Beaver Valley, Monaca
  • Lycoming, Muncy
  • Plymouth Meeting
  • Washington Crown Center
