Mosquito Spray Wednesday In Newtown Township

NEWTOWN, PA — Parts of Newtown Township will be sprayed Wednesday to reduce mosquitoes capable of transmitting West Nile Virus, the county has announced.

The spray is planned for Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2017 in the area of Upper Silver Lake Road and Old Frost Road.

The Bucks County Mosquito Control Program said it will conduct an ultra-low volume spray operation using liquid larvicide. The treatments will be administered via truck-mounted equipment. The equipment dispenses Altosid SR5 larviciding solution at the rate of 4 ounces of active ingredient/acre, the county said.

"This product is designed to disrupt the breeding of mosquitoes in woodland pools and artificial containers. The application material has a very low toxicity profile to mammals and will have negligible impact on non-target insects and the environment," according to the announcement.

The spray will begin at dusk.

West Nile virus can cause West Nile encephalitis, an infection that can result in an inflammation of the brain. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, all residents in areas where virus activity has been identified are at risk of contracting West Nile encephalitis.

Weather conditions and other unexpected events could delay or cancel the spray. If conditions do not allow application on August 9, the spray will be rescheduled.
