New Art Exhibition Opens At BCCC's Hicks Art Center Gallery

There is a new exhibition at Bucks County Community College’s Hicks Art Center Gallery. MATTER: Works by Michael Grothusen & Buy Shaver will be open through Dec. 10.

The show, guest curated by Richard Torchia, consists of a site-specific sculpture by Grothusen and a text mural by Shaver that explores the gaps between perception and belief.

Grothusen is a mixed-media sculptor who makes objects, temporary site installations and permanent public commissions. He has created site-specific works for numerous venues, including the Philadelphia International Airport, Michener Art Museum, Abington Art Center, Crane Arts, Eastern State Penitentiary, Drexel University, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Carnegie Mellon University, Gallery Joe and the Philadelphia Art Alliance. Grothusen earned a BFA from the University of Kansas and an MFA from Tyler School of Art. He is an associate professor and coordinator of the sculpture program at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.

Shaver, also based in Philadelphia, has a varied artistic background that includes Eastern and Western painting, graphic arts, exhibition design, and conceptually based installation art. He is the author of Moving the Eye Through 2-D Design — A Visual Primer and a professor of foundation classes at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia.

The artists will take part in a panel discussion about their work from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 7, in Grupp Hall room 257 on the Newtown campus. That will be followed by a reception in the Hicks Art Center Gallery from 5 to 7 p.m., featuring a curator’s talk at 6:15 p.m.

All events are free and open to the public.

The Hicks Art Center Gallery is located at Bucks County Community College, 275 Swamp Road, Newtown.

The gallery is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday and Friday; 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday (closed November 21 – 25).
