New Council Rock Redistricting Proposal To Be Revealed Sept. 25

Council Rock's redistricting committee has agreed upon revised boundary modifications and a new plan will be revealed by Sept. 25.

NEWTOWN, PA — Council Rock's Redistricting Committee has agreed upon revised boundary modifications, and a new redistricting proposal is being prepared, according to information from the school district. That proposal will be posted to the Council Rock website on Sept. 25, and will be publicly presented for community feedback at the Oct. 1 Redistricting Process Public Meeting.

There is no information available yet on how the maps will compare to a previous proposal that was presented last winter. That plan, which drew ire from Northampton Township residents, was presented in January but a vote was halted so that additional demographic considerations could be made.

The revised proposal will be posted to the district website with related maps, Council Rock officials said in an update to parents.

The committee is tasked with shifting students from several schools in an attempt to balance enrollment across the district. It is made up of two parent representatives from each building, three building administrators, and five central office administrators. According to the district, the committee studied enrollment projections, reviewed community feedback, examined housing information and analyzed building capacity.

The original proposal, which was released in January, drew outrage from many Northampton Township residents, who said redistricting will isolate their children from the community and divide neighborhoods.

The new proposal is crafted with data from the district's new demographer, Cropper GIS Consulting. A demographic study prepared by that firm had been publicly presented at a May school board meeting.

A special meeting for a school board vote on redistricting plan has been tentatively set for Dec. 13.
