NEWTOWN TOWNSHIP, PA — The bagel wars are about to heat up in Newtown.

Spread Bagelry, a Philadelphia-based wood-fired bagel chain with 17 locations from Pennsylvania to Georgia, is poised to enter the Bucks County market with its 18th store coming soon to the Village at Newtown shopping center.

The chain is known for its wood-fired bagel sandwiches, including the Standard, the Cure, the Classic, and the Club. It follows the simple mantra, "Flour from wheat. Honey from bees. Fire from wood. Simple is good."

The chain’s director of finance Matt Ambrosine and land development attorney Joe Blackburn were in Newtown Township Tuesday night to detail the chain’s plans to open at the site of the Five Guys hamburger shop on Eagle Road.

The Bagelry is seeking conditional use approval from the township to open the new eatery at the center. Last night, township planners opened the door, voting unanimously to recommend approval of the use to the board of supervisors, which has the final say.

Blackburn said the Bagelry plans to update the 2300-square- foot space, increasing seating capacity from 23 to 37 and changing the hours of operation from a lunch and dinner venue to breakfast and lunch.

The shop will be open from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m., making it a better fit for that end of the shopping center, Blackburn said.

Five Guys opened at the site in July 2023, replacing Saladworks. When asked whether 5 Guys would close or relocate, Blackburn said he didn’t know.

When the new bagel shop opens, Ambrosine said Bucks Countians can look forward to Montreal-style, honey-boiled bagels, melt-in-the-middle sandwiches and a lineup of house spreads. For a detailed menu, click here.

Ambrosine said the chain operates a commissary in Fishtown where the dough is made and the bagels are shaped for shipment to its stores where they are baked in an authentic wood-fired brick oven.

According to its website, Spread Bagelry was born in Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse neighborhood - “a place where grit meets good taste and great hospitality matters.

“We’re here before sunrise, rolling dough, stoking the oven, and getting ready to welcome our community," says its website. "At Spread, it’s not just about the bagel — it’s about the warmth behind the counter, the rhythm of the kitchen, the fire in the oven, and the neighborhoods we proudly call home.”

Spread Bagelry has not yet announced an opening date for its Newtown store.
