Newtown 12s Win District 30 Championship

The Council Rock Newtown 12-year-old Little League team outpaced Northampton at the District 30 Little League Championship game Tuesday night at the Northampton Civic Center.

The Council Rock Newtown 12-year-old Little League team beat Northampton for the District 30 Little League Championship in a game Tuesday at the Northampton Civic Center.

Newtown made it to the District 30 finals through the losers bracket after a 3-2 loss in their opening game to Northampton.  Facing possible elimination, Newtown fought back to make it to the final game, but had to beat Northampton twice in order to take the District 30 title.

Starting on the mound Tuesday for Newtown was right-hander Brian Kane, who showed his grit early by pitching out of a bases-loaded jam.

At the top of the second inning, the score was tied 2-2.  Kane was replaced on the mound by left-hander Seumus Crossett after taking a hard line drive to the leg.  Crossett ended the inning with a strikeout to hold the game at 2-2.

In the bottom half of the second, Newtown bats exploded.  After base hits by Tully and Crossett, Deegan drew a walk.  With the bases buzzing with runners, Trevor Tucillo hit a line drive over the center field fence for a grand slam.

Newtown's hit parade continued with a double by Jared Schram and a run scoring single by Matt Rowen.  Rowen eventually scored on a pass ball, to cap off a six run 2nd inning.  Newtown tacked on three more runs for a final score of 11-2.

The team is guided by coaches Ed Rowen, Mark Bartlett and Phil Tully.

The players for the Council Rock Newtown team include Pat Bartlett, Steve Buten, Seumus Crossett, Zac Deegan, Brian Kane, Eric Miller, Jay Alex Miller, Matt Rowen, Jared Schram, Trevor Tucillo and Cavan Tully.  They are headed to the Section 6 championship series beginning this Saturday. It will be hosted by Northampton.

A win in the Section 6 championship series and Council Rock Newtown 12-year-olds will be off to State College in an attempt to capture the state trophy.

In 2009, as 10 year olds, this team won the title of Pennsylvania State Champions.  In 2010, as 11 year olds, this same team made it to the final state championship game, only to lose to the Western Pennsylvania team West Point.  A win in State College sends the boys to Bristol, Conn. for the Mid-Atlantic Region Championship series.  The team's ultimate goal is to represent the Mid-Atlantic Region for the Little League World Series.
