NEWTOWN, PA — A Newtown barbershop teamed up with the Bucks County Intermediate Unit to give several young men with autism and other special needs new hairdos for the prom.

Bowen’s Barber Shop, located at 26 Richboro Newtown Road, cut the hair of five young men who are heading to prom Friday, April 26.

Bowen's gave the gentlemen fresh haircuts, blow drys, styling, and shaves to make them feel and look their very best for prom.

"We are so honored to team up with the Bucks County IU Hope Transition Program," Tracey Bowen, owner of Bowen's said. "When [Instructional Assistant and Job Coach Merri Kurman] asked me if I was interested, I immediately said yes, without any hesitation. It is so rewarding to be able to positively impact someone’s life with a haircut."

All five are part of the IU Hope Transition Program.

"This experience is so positive for my students in many ways," Kurman said. "Their prom wish for great hair is coming true, but more so, and from a scholastic standpoint, they are getting to experience the haircut procedure as well as independently communicate with their barber. This will promote confidence and teach them life skills and that will undoubtedly help them transition into their adult worlds."
