Newtown Borough Police To Carry Narcan
The change in policy happened after residents and the district attorney made an urgent appeal to local officials for the lifesaving drug.

Newtown Borough will now carry the lifesaving drug Narcan, after residents and officials pushed for a change in policy.
The borough had been one of just two municipalities in Bucks County that didn't carry the drug, which reverses the effects of an opioid overdose.
According to information from borough mayor Charles Swartz, the police chief has met with officers and the department is in agreement to implement the use of Narcan in Newtown Borough.

"This decision was made at the urging of residents and the new information given to the Council and the Police department at the meeting with the District Attorney," he said in the statement.
This change in policy will take effect as soon as Narcan is available to the department, Swartz said.

"I would like to thank the district attorney and the residents for their input on this issue," the mayor said.
Last month, the district attorney made an appeal to the borough to carry the drug. Following that meeting, which was publicized in the local media, a group of residents started a citizen's group aimed at urging the borough police to carry the drug.
